Why won't my debit card connect? The name doesn't match

If you're seeing a "Debit card name doesn't match" error, the cardholder name on your debit card doesn't exactly match the verified name on your Split Pay account. Even small differences trigger it — a nickname, a missing middle name, names in a different order. It's a standard security check to confirm you're authorized to use the card, it applies to your first Split Pay payment, and it can't be overridden. Two ways to fix it:

Fix 1: Link a debit card with your exact name on it. Fastest path. The new card is checked automatically and usually clears right away — if it needs another look, you'll see a notice in the app.

Fix 2: Upload documentation through the link we email you when the card is held (legible PDF, JPG, or PNG under 10MB). Three document types are accepted:

  • A bank statement from the last 60 days showing your name and this card or account

  • A joint account statement from the last 60 days showing your name and the cardholder's

  • A legal name change record (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) showing both your old and new name

Our compliance team reviews every upload and emails you the decision. Note: authorization or permission letters from the cardholder aren't accepted.

Your deadline depends on when the mismatch was caught. During setup: 2 business days. On a scheduled payment: 2:45pm ET the same day — on that timeline, linking a matching card is the safer bet. If the hold isn't resolved in time, a scheduled payment goes back to your billing portal for this cycle (pay it there to avoid late fees from your landlord, lender, or servicer), and an unresolved setup is canceled — you'd start again with a matching card.
