What's the 2:45pm ET deadline for portal payment retries?

When a portal payment fails, you have until 2:45pm Eastern Time the same day to fix the issue and retry. After that, the payment fails permanently and goes back to your portal, lender, or servicer.

The window:

  • Weekday failure: retry by 2:45pm ET that same day

  • Saturday failure: extended — you have until Monday 2:45pm ET

  • Sunday failure: until Monday 2:45pm ET

The 2:45pm ET cutoff exists because that's the deadline for sending the retry through the banking network and still having it process the same day.

If you miss the window: log into your portal, lender, or servicer account right away and make sure a new payment is scheduled — even if your balance shows the payment as paid. Their system takes time to process the failure notice, so the balance can look paid when it isn't. Depending on your portal, the payment may reschedule automatically or you may need to submit a new payment manually — check and confirm either way. Waiting risks a late payment, and your landlord, lender, or servicer may charge a late fee on their side.
