When a portal payment fails, you have until 2:45pm Eastern Time the same day to fix the issue and retry. After that, the payment goes back to your portal and you'll need to deal with it on that side.
The window:
Weekday failure: retry by 2:45pm ET that same day
Saturday failure: extended — you have until Monday 2:45pm ET
Sunday failure: until Monday 2:45pm ET
The 2:45pm ET cutoff exists because that's the deadline for sending the retry through the banking network and still having it process the same day. After that, your portal pulls the payment back and either retries on their own schedule or requires you to start fresh.
Why this matters: if you miss the window, you may need to schedule a new payment in your portal manually, and your landlord may charge a late fee. So if your payment fails and you can fix it quickly, do that before 2:45pm ET.
