What's the 2:45pm ET deadline for portal payment retries?

Please note: this deadline only applies after a payment fails. When a portal payment fails, you always get a chance to fix the issue and retry — and your deadline is always 2:45pm Eastern Time. Which day depends on when your payment processed:

  • Payment processed before 8am ET → retry by 2:45pm ET that same day

  • Payment processed after 8am ET → retry by 2:45pm ET the next day

  • If that next day falls on a weekend → you have until Monday at 2:45pm ET

Your failure notification always states your exact deadline — go by the date and time in that message.

The 2:45pm ET cutoff exists because that's the deadline for sending the retry through the banking network and still having it process that day.

If you miss the window: log into your portal, lender, or servicer account right away and make sure a new payment is scheduled — even if your balance shows the payment as paid. Their system takes time to process the failure notice, so the balance can look paid when it isn't. Depending on your portal, the payment may reschedule automatically or you may need to submit a new payment manually — check and confirm either way. Waiting risks a late payment, and your landlord, lender, or servicer may charge a late fee on their side.
