Split Pay only works with portals that accept bank account (ACH) payments — not portals that only accept debit or credit cards.
Why:
Your Split Pay account and routing numbers are designed to be added to your portal as a bank account payment method. If your portal doesn't have a "Add bank account" option (or doesn't accept ACH), Split Pay can't be used there.
A few common scenarios:
Portal asks for routing number and account number: ✅ Split Pay works
Portal only asks for card number, expiration, and CVV: ❌ Split Pay can't be used
Portal lets you choose between card and bank account: ✅ Pick the bank account / ACH option, then enter your Split Pay account and routing numbers
Portal accepts both, but charges a fee for ACH: ✅ Still works, but you may pay a small portal convenience fee on top of your rent (this is set by your portal, not by Split Pay)
Your options if your portal only accepts cards:
Check if there's a bank account option you didn't notice. Some portals hide ACH under "Other payment methods" or require an extra step to enable it.
Ask your portal or landlord if they can enable bank account payments.
Use Split Pay for direct payments instead — if your landlord can accept direct payments (not through the portal), Split Pay can work that way too. See the FAQ on direct vs. portal payments.
Wait for portal changes — many portals add ACH support over time. If your portal doesn't accept it today, that may change.
