My landlord won't accept my Split Pay payment — what do I do? (Direct renters)

This FAQ is for direct renters — where Split Pay sends payment to your landlord directly, and your landlord needs to accept each payment. If you pay through a portal, lender, or servicer using Split Pay account and routing numbers, see My landlord said they don't accept Split Pay — what do I do?.

For direct payments, your landlord has to accept each payment for it to process. If they're refusing or ignoring the notification, here's how to think about it.

Why they may be hesitant:

Most direct landlords haven't seen Split Pay before. They're being asked to accept a payment from an unfamiliar source — that hesitation is reasonable. A short conversation usually resolves it.

What to tell them:

"I'm using Split Pay to manage timing. You'll receive the full rent amount on the scheduled date — accepting just confirms you're okay with receiving it. Nothing else changes on your end, and you don't have to sign up for anything."

A lot of landlords accept once they understand they're being paid in full and on time, with no commitment on their end.

What to do if they still refuse:

  1. Don't pressure them. If your landlord doesn't want to accept Split Pay, we don't recommend pushing. That's a relationship issue first and foremost.

  2. Consider alternatives. You may need to pay rent another way this month — bank transfer, check, or whatever they prefer.

  3. Think about whether direct is the right fit. If your landlord is reluctant to accept Split Pay directly, but their property has a payment portal, switching to the portal flow might be smoother. (You'd need to apply separately for the portal product — direct and portal eligibility aren't shared.)

One important thing for direct renters:

Right now, direct renters can only split their direct rent payments. To use Split Pay for a portal, mortgage, or car loan, you'd need to apply and be approved for that specific product.
